Healthy Homemade "Teddy Grahams" (and Cheesy Bears too)!

10/25/2011 By Jamie 13 Comments

Finding easy, healthy snacks for little people is difficult. Other than fruits and veggies, finding easy snacks that aren’t completely processed and full of sugar is either impossible or expensive. They are out there. There are some organic snacks that have minimal ingredients that are all recognizable but these are the ones that cost a pretty penny (as far as snacks are concerned anyway). SOO….I set out to make my own healthy cracker snacks. I haven’t perfected the art of creating my own recipes but I am pretty darn good at adapting them…

Healthy Teddy Grahams

adapted from this recipe

Ingredients

makes roughly 200 crackers (if using tiny cookie cutter)

  • 1 cup + 2 tablespoons Whole Wheat Flour
  • 1/4 cup sucanat or coconut sugar (my personal favorite)
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 2 Tablespoon honey (only for babies 1 year or older – may substitute pure maple syrup or eliminate completely for younger ones)
  • 1/8 cup or 2 Tablespoons cold water
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1/4 cups or 4 Tablespoon butter (I use Kerrygold butter), cold and cubed

Instructions

1. Preheat oven to 350° F.

2. In a food processor, pulse together flour, sucanat, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and cinnamon.

3. Next pulse in butter until mixed together and crumby (hehe).

4. Add honey, vanilla, and a tablespoon of water. Pulse to combine.

5. Pulse in other tablespoon of water.

finished dough

6. Chill dough for a little while (15-30 minutes)

7. Roll dough out fairly thin (depending on how thick/thin you want your crackers).

8. Cut out your shapes. I picked up this cute little cookie cutter at Hobby Lobby in the clay crafts section for $1.67. It came with 3 different size bears. They had some other shapes too but bears are perfect!

9. Place the teddies on a parchment lined cookie sheet. They can be pretty close together.

10. Bake for 8-10 minutes. 9 seemed about perfect – they burn really quickly. Since ovens vary, start at 8 and take out when edges are just golden.

11. Let cool for 5-10 minutes.

12. Store in an airtight container. Dig in and enjoy! These things are soooo tasty!

Another variation on this recipe…

Homemade Cheesy Bears

adapted from this recipe

Ingredients

  • 8 oz shredded cheddar cheese
  • 4 Tablespoons butter, cold and cubed
  • 1 cup whole wheat flour
  • 3/4 teaspoon salt
  • 2 Tablespoons cold water
Instructions
  1. Pulse everything but water in a food processor until the mixture is well mixed and crumby.
  2. Pulse water in 1 Tablespoon at a time.
  3. Chill dough for a little while (15-30 minutes).
  4. Roll dough out fairly thin.
  5. Place on a parchment lined cookie sheet, fairly close together.
  6. Bake for 15 minutes at 350° F.
Makes way more than 7 dozen!

Hope you enjoy these recipes and happy cracker making!

Jamie! Genius! Please just be careful (and warn all your readers), feeding honey to kids under 2 can have serious effects, including botulism poisoning! The latest recommendation might be age 1, but just be careful 🙂

Yes, adding honey is only for babies older than 1…in fact, honey can be completely eliminated from the recipe or exchanged for pure maple syrup. Thanks for the heads up, anonymous ; )

Jamie very excited to try this! Thank you SOOO much! Do we have to use sucanat? I’ve never heard of it before. Would reg granulated work instead or brown sugar better? Thanks! Deborah

Hey Deborah! I think that you could use refined sugar…maybe half white and half brown. I have used coconut sugar too. We just try to stay away from refined sugar but it should definitely work! This is definitely my go to for toddler snacks! Just made another double recipe myself!

Thank you so much for posting this, we are trying to move to eating all unprocessed foods and I have had a lot of success, but was nervous about dropping those yummy little fish in the paper bag from our emergency toddler kit. 🙂 I am making both of these recipes today and I am so excited.

Mal, I did experiment with chocolate ones once. They were pretty good! I added 2-3 tablespoons cocoa powder and omitted the cinnamon. I may try making them again and post the recipe!

Great recipe! Would this make a good pie crust, maybe with some minor modifications?
